Workiva: Most Common “First-Timer” Questions

Following up on last week’s blog about the beginning steps with Workiva you didn’t expect, here are questions that Labrador often gets from companies using Workiva for their proxy for the first time:

1. Why does my PDF look great but the EDGAR preview look messy?

EDGAR doesn’t support “fancy” fonts or complex layering. You often have to simplify the EDGAR version or use “EDGAR-compliant” formatting.

2. How do I get my table to span across two pages?

You can’t span a table across two pages. Two separate tables need to be placed on the facing pages and the data linked from a source doc to the tables. Management of the row heights needs to be manually maintained if one row on one page is deeper than another.

3. Can I just import my InDesign file?

No. You can import Word or Excel docs – but InDesign content typically needs to be recreated or imported as specific image assets to ensure it’s EDGAR-ready.

4. When do I start the XBRL tagging?

For proxies – specifically the “Pay-Versus-Performance” section – tagging should start as soon as your tables are “substantially final.” Don’t wait until the day before you need to file with the SEC on Edgar to start tagging!
